"Outside Opportunities"

Seafarer's Boxes: Last year, Port Chaplains delivered 10,209 gifts on board 442 ships which
had seafarers from 71 different countries! The gifts came from 251 churches and organizations. You can make a difference for people who aren't able to be with their families during the holiday season. And, it's EASY! Here's how:

  1. Grab a shoe box.
  2. Pack the box FULL of items such as these: band-aids, comb, dental floss, deodorant, disposable razors, flashlight, kleenex, Q-tips, lotion, lip balm, nail clippers, needle and thread, shaving cream, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, address book, calendar, disposable camera, gum, hard candy, key chains, paper, envelopes, pencils, pens, playing cards, puzzles, games, postcards, socks, stamps, Texas souvenirs, t-shirts and baseball caps
  3. Wrap the whole box in Christmas paper (no ribbons or bows, please)
  4. Bring the box to the Welcome Center by Nov. 20

For more information, please see Jo Ann Stevenson.

Socks for Houston's Homeless: Donations of new men's socks are being accepted for the sock ministry at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Volunteers wash the feet of homeless men in Houston, and then present them with new socks. Please bring all donations to the Welcome Center before Sunday, Nov. 20. For more information about this ministry, please see Don or Anne Strong.

Habitat for Humanity Construction: We build every Wednesday and Thursday from 8 am to 2:30 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm (lunch is provided for all volunteers on Saturdays). No prior experience is needed. We do project training each morning, on-site and all tools are provided. All construction workers must be at least 14 years old. No one under the age of 14 is permitted on the construction site for safety and liability reasons. Work includes most all areas of home construction, including framing, painting, tile work, roofing, landscaping, fences and clean-up. You choose what you want to do! Contact: Jim Seloover
